  “A gabion (from Italian gabbione meaning "big cage"; from Italian gabbia and Latin cavea meaning "cage") is a cage, cylinder or box filled with rocks, concrete, or sometimes sand and soil for use in civil engineering, road building, military applications and landscaping.” –Wikipedia. 

  Gabion box according to the production process, is divided into welded gabion and weave gabion. Here we introduce the weave gabion. The most common gabion box is made of hexagonal mesh weaving machine, to make a panel, in the assembly of these panels. It has a history of more then 200 years, under the development of representative companies such as Maccaferri, the gabion series has a variety of products. I introduce the different types and use scenarios one by one.

 

              

 

1. Gabion Box: Gabion box meaning the gabion which height of 0.5 meters and above, width and height of more than 1 meter. Generally used as a retaining wall or strengthen river bank.

2. Gabion mattress: Mattress meaning pad. Compared with gabion box, it is shorter in height and larger in length and width. The general height is 0.17 and 0.3mm, the width is 2m, and the length is 2-6m. Generally, installed in the riverbed and shore, play a role in preventing erosion.

 

           

 

3. Terramesh: Morphologically, a tail is added to the gabion box. Also used as a retaining wall, the tail make terramesh with a stronger connection to its environment than gabion box.

 

           

 

4. Green Terramesh: It is slightly different from in the front of terramesh. The fiber at the front provides a good base for the greening.

 

           

The following production are also with the production of hexagonal weave machine.

 

1. Gabion roll: it is made directly into a roll shape by the hexagonal mesh weaving machine, the general width is 2 meters, the length is 25-50 meters. It can be used as a rockfall protect mesh or fence. There are also gabion projects, it used as lid.

2. Macmat: when produce, let synthetic material filament intertwine on the gabion roll. It will be fixed on the slope, prepare for greening.

 

            

 

3. Rockfall protection netting: adding wire rope into gabion rolls, when install, need rope, clamp, plate, etc. In the mountains section, where is near with the high-speed and railway, it plays the role of preventing falling rocks from falling.

 

             

 

4. Hexagonal reinforced road mesh: when weaving, add a horizontal wire into the mesh, in order to strong the structure. It is used in road repair.

5. FlexMac DT(gabion bastion): it is specifical box, without bottom and lid, lined with geotextile, similar with HESCO barrier. It is filled with soil and sand, in flood control and arm defense.
