What are the rules for chain block?

09 Apr.,2024

Chain pulley blocks represent a specific type of lifting equipment that operates by employing chains to elevate and descend loads. These devices make use of a pulley system to attain a mechanical advantage. In the context of heavy lifting operations, efficiency and safety assume critical significance. Consequently, it becomes essential to bear in mind essential guidelines to ensure the secure and effective utilization of chain pulley blocks. This article aims to explore these tips, assisting in maximising efficiency and establishing a safe working environment.

1.     Choose the Appropriate Chain Pulley Block

The first step in ensuring safety and effectiveness is choosing the proper chain pulley block for your unique lifting requirements. When making your decision, take into account elements like environment, lift height, and weight capacity. Make sure the chain pulley block you choose satisfies your lifting needs, complies with industry safety standards, and is appropriate for the environmental conditions it will be exposed to.

2.     Inspect and Maintain Regularly

The safe operation of chain pulley blocks depends on routine inspections and maintenance.  Check the chain, hooks, and pulleys and closely inspect the chain pulley block for any signs of wear and tear, such as broken chains, hooks, or sheaves, before each use.

Lubricate moving parts as recommended by the manufacturer. To address any potential problems and lengthen the equipment’s lifespan, schedule routine maintenance as well.

3.     Ensure Proper Installation

The chain pulley block must be installed correctly to avoid accidents and increase safety. When mounting the block, be sure to carefully follow the manufacturer’s instructions and secure it to a solid, load-bearing structure. Don’t rush the installation process; doing it wrong can result in mishaps and equipment breakdowns.

4.     Train and Educate Operators

The safety and efficiency of chain pulley block operators can be enhanced through proper training and education. Educate them on equipment inspection, safe operation techniques, and emergency response protocols. Regularly assess the skills and knowledge of operators and provide refresher training when necessary. Well-trained operators are more adept at mitigating risks and ensuring effective operations.

5.     Inspect the Lifting Area

Check the designated area for potential hazards before beginning any lifting tasks. To prevent accidents, ensure a clear path, make the area secure, and remove any obstacles from the area. Find any overhead obstructions that may hinder the lifting operation and remove them. In addition to reducing risks, a neat and organised lifting area makes the lifting process easier and safer.

6.     Implement Correct Lifting Techniques

Proper lifting techniques must be adopted to maintain control and reduce the risk of accidents. Establish clear signals and commands with the lifting operation team through communication. Before lifting, make sure the load is balanced and securely fastened. Use smooth and controlled motions to avoid sudden movements or swings.

7.     Regularly Review and Update Safety Procedures

As technology progresses and the demands of the workplace evolve, it is vital to periodically evaluate and enhance your safety protocols. Keep yourself informed about the most recent industry standards, regulations, and make appropriate adaptations to your procedures. Maintaining a proactive and knowledgeable stance can establish a secure and efficient working environment that benefits all individuals.

Some Essential Chain Pulley Block Safety Dos and Don’ts: You Can’t Afford to Miss

Dos:

  • Ensure the chain pulley block has the appropriate SWL capacity for the load to be lifted
  • Verify that the chain pulley block and all lifting accessories have the appropriate certifications
  • Maintain proper distance during the lifting operation
  • Throughout the lifting process, wear the proper personal protection gear
  • Place the hook directly over the load’s centre of gravity
  • The chain pulley block should only be used for vertical lifting
  • Include knowledgeable and skilled individuals in the lifting operation

Don’ts:

  • Avoid loading the load abruptly or with sudden jerks
  • Never lift, support, or transport people using a chain pulley block
  • Never throw or drop the chain block onto the ground
  • Never stand close to a load that is being lifted or suspended
  • Never use a chain pulley block without the necessary instruction and permission
  • When lifting, suspending, or lowering the load, be careful not to exceed the safe working load limit
  • Never leave the load that is suspended unattended

What is a Chain Block?

Chain blocks are portable devices used to manually raise or lower a load. Chain hoists are designed for lifting and material handling tasks. They can raise and lower loads via the user pulling up or down on the hand chain.  There is a wide range of chain blocks available and they come in various capacities and heights for lifting.

Chain blocks are designed for vertical lifting and should never be used for horizontal lifting. Most models are constructed to be easy to use with a simple hook to rig them up. Before using a chain block it’s important to ensure you have the correct training to operate it safely. You will need to identify any warnings and instructions for the safe use of all equipment required for the task at hand. A visual inspection should be carried out before every use and at frequent intervals, by a competent person as per the Australia standards or equivalent in your location. This involves checking the condition of the hand chain, load chain, sheave wheels, hooks, and outer casing. The mechanism and any safety devices should be checked for any wear, nicks/cuts in chains, bent components, rust etc. Ensure users are familiar with any safety devices such as load brakes and safety latch on hooks. You will also need to identify the working load limit. You must not lift loads that exceed the recommended working load limit of your equipment.

Manually operate chain block first to ensure that it operates correctly. Ensure the chain is not twisted and able to move freely. Check that you are using the proper slings and attachments. Never leave a load hanging on the hoist. Ensure equipment is stored and handled correctly.

Always refer to the supplier or manufacturer’s instructions on safe use, maintenance and storage. This article is meant as a general information guide only, for further information consult user guides provided by the manufacturer.
